DNR Youth Deer Hunt, Fall 2008

Iowa Safari Club International DNR Youth Deer Hunt: Chase and his first deer!

From Dave, who bought the DNR Youth Deer Hunt for his son, Chase at the 2008 Iowa SCI Banquet Silent Auction table. Dave just returned from a tour in Iraq with the Iowa Air National Guard and was able to attend the class with his son.

"We got there Friday at 6 p.m. and had class till 9 p.m.. Then Saturday class from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. We hunted from 2 p.m. to 5:30, and had more classes 5:30 till 9 p.m.. We could have hunted all day Sunday, but he got his deer Saturday, so we went home. It was a great experience for both of us, we both learned a lot and he was able to shoot a deer on his first deer hunt.

There were 27 mentor/hunter pairs attending, and they brought in 14 deer within the first two hours of hunting. It is a population control, anterless hunt. We must have seen 30 deer walking around in a herd. Really cool !" Dave

The day before Thanksgiving, the Iowa SCI Board of Directors donated 3,200 meals (close to 1,000 pounds of bison and elk meat) to 3 homeless shelters in the City of Des Moines.  Randy Ruth of Frederika, Iowa and owner/operator of Frederika Locker has been with us since the beginning.  With his help since Marlene and I traveled to South Dakota on our first buffalo hunt in November 2003, almost 11,000 meals have been provided to those in need.  Sincerely, Nels Spevak

The Mentored Outdoor Experience Deer Hunt was held again at the Springbrook Conservation Education Center November 16-18, 2007. The Iowa Chapter of Safari Club International awarded 4 scholarships for the programs to individuals who applied.  One young recipient, Darrin Gordon, harvested a deer the first day and assisted me with the program.  He is a very deserving young man who really appreciated the experience.  His teacher, Kathy Hodges, was also named Chapter Educator of the Year (2007).  To read Darrin's essay, click here.  Sincerely, A Jay Winter.
